Experimental Metal


Melechesh is an Assyrian black metal band that originated in Jerusalem.  The band’s goal was to create a type of black metal incorporating extensive Middle Eastern influences mainly based on Assyrian (Mesopotamian) and occult themes (both musically and lyrically); the band invented the title "Assyrian metal" to best describe their type of metal.  


Pestilence is a death metal band from the Netherlands founded in 1986. They are known for incorporating jazz and fusion elements into their music. After disbanding in order to pursue other musical directions in 1994, Pestilence reunited in 2008.

Bad Acid Trip

Bad Acid Trip was formed in North Hollywood, California in 1989 during the beginnings of the West Coast power violence scene.  The band is recognizable as being one of the more coherent grindcore acts.  

Bastard Noise

The Bastard Noise was founded in 1991, initially as a side project of powerviolence band Man Is The Bastard.  The project has featured many artists and contributors over the years, and their unique sound incorporates a variety of instruments, some of which are crafted specifically for individual projects.


Contrastic is a grindcore band formed in 1993 from the Czech Republic.  They have an experimental sound that includes elements of electronic and industrial music with an experimental flare.


Alarum are an Australian progressive metal and technical death metal band that formed in 1992.  The name Alarum means “A mechanism that produces awareness”.

(the) Melvins

The Melvins are an American band that formed in 1983.   Since 1984, singer and guitarist Buzz Osborne (also known as King Buzzo) and drummer Dale Crover have been the band's ongoing members.  The Melvins' music is influenced by Black Flag's mix of punk and metal on their album My War, and other slow punk acts like Swans, Flipper and Wipers, but also by some hard rock and metal bands such as Kiss and Alice Cooper; however, their idiosyncratic approach, bizarre sense of humor, and experimentation make neat categorization difficult.


Kylesa is a metal group that borrows elements of crust punk, psychedelic rock, stoner rock, sludge metal, and indie rock. They have three different singers. Kylesa formed in Savannah in 2001, taking their name from "kilesa mara", a Buddhist term denoting delusory mental states.


Castevet is a  band from New York, NY.  Formed in 2006, the group features members of other New York acts such as Biolich, Krallice, and Copremesis.  To date they have three releases, one EP and two full length albums, including their most recent October 2013 release titled "Obsian".  Castevet will be making their second appearance at Maryland Deathfest in 2014.


Bethlehem is a German metal band from Grevenbroich, formed in 1991 by Jürgen Bartsch and Kläus Matton. Bethlehem are widely credited for inventing a whole new sub-genre of metal, called Dark metal, named after their first full length album. Many of their lyrics revolve around sickness, morbidity, suicide, death and madness, and may to some extent be personal to the band.
