Death Metal


Another excellent Canadian export, Mitochondrion originated in Vancouver, British Columbia.  Like Auroch, with whom Mitochondrion share members, their sound is completely unique, pushing the boundaries of death metal. Sonically dense, the quartet makes dizzying, complex chaos listenable and enjoyable, but not for the faint of heart. Their first MDF appearance will be terrifying, no doubt.


Bölzer is a two-piece black/death metal band formed in 2008 in Zurich, Switzerland.  Despite their brief history, Bölzer has gained some international noteriety with their most recent releases. Their sound draws on traditional black and death metal and incorporates a slower, more doom-laden style.  The group shares vocalists with New Zealand's Witchrist.  Bölzer will be making their first appearance at Maryland Deathfest in 2014.

Death Toll 80k

Death Toll 80k are a crossover grindcore band from Lappeenranta, Finland.  Formed in 2008, their sound blends elements of grindcore with crust punk, death metal, and thrash metal, while incorporating lyrical themes that address issues such as war, the environment, and other social issues.  Death Toll 80k will be bringing their unique brand of grindcore across the pond to make an appearance at Maryland Deathfest in 2014.

Nocturnus AD

Nocturnus AD are a death metal band from Tampa, Florida.  Originally called Nocturnus, the band formed in 1987.  They are one of the first death metal acts to incorporate keyboards and other sound effects into their music.  They also differed from their death metal peers by incorporating science-fiction type themes into their lyrics.  Their 1990 release, The Key, is considered one of the greatest death metal albums of its' time, and was highly influential for the many death metal acts that followed.


Cancer are a British death/thrash metal band formed in Ironbridge, Telford, Shropshire in 1988.  After releasing 5 full-length albums from 1988 through 1995, Cancer split up in 1996.  The group attained some level of success before their break-up, and their album Death Shall Rise (1991), is considered to be one of the top death metal albums of all time.   As of 2013, Cancer has reformed with it's original line-up.  They will be making an exclusive US appearance, their first in the since 1993, at Maryland Deathfest 2014.

Soilent Green

Soilent Green formed in 1988 in Metarie, Louisiana (a suburb of New Orleans); the band is named after the 70's sci-fi movie Soilent Green.  After releasing several demos and splits in the early 90's, the band blasted onto the scene after signing with Relapse records and releasing several highly acclaimed records, even being mentioned in Rolling Stone magazine for their 1998 release, Sewn Mouth Secrets.


Originally known by the name Pungent Stench, Schirenc  formed as a death metal band in Vienna, Austria in 1988.   Though the group is mainly catagorized as death metal, their music contains influences from outside the world of metal, such as blues and rock.  Their dark and sexually oriented lyrics are often humorous, and the groups lyrical themes match their twisted and gruesome artwork to perfection.  The combination of a unique musical and artistic vision helped the band develop a cult following in the death metal scene, and they enjoyed much success until splitting up in 2007.

God Macabre

God Macabre were one of the first Swedish death metal bands (along with peers Carnage and Entombed) and are considered highly influential to Swedish death metal.  Formed in the winter of 1988 as a grindcore band named Botten På Burken, in 1989 they began playing death metal and changed their name to Macabre End. Their 1990 demo, Consumed by Darkness, became an underground hit.  Thereafter they changed their name once again to God Macabre, and recorded one album before splitting up in 1992.


Witchrist are a death/doom/black metal band from Auckland, New Zealand.  Formed in 2008, Witchrist shares half their lineup with fellow New Zealand "Doom Cult" members, Diocletian.  Playing a unique mix of blackened death metal mixed with epic doom, Witchrist incorporates the darker side of eastern Asian religions and mythology into their lyrical and artistic themes.  Their 2012 release, The Grand Tormentor, received high praises, and caught the attention of the international metal community.


Exhale is a Swedish death metal/goregrind band formed in 2004, influenced by such acts as Nasum, Misery Index, Rotten Sound, Entombed, and more.
