Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey is a Southern influenced death metal supergroup, hailing from Richmond, Virginia.  The band formed in 2005 as the side project to five very busy musicians who were all looking for additional creative outlets besides their own pre-existing projects. Composed of Ben Hogg from Beaten Back to Pure on vocals, Erik Larson from Alabama Thunderpussy and Bo Leslie from The Last Van Zant on guitars, Summer Welch from Baroness handling Bass duties and Dave Witte, from numerous bands including Municipal Waste, Burnt by the Sun and Discordance Axis on drums.


Obliteration is a death metal band from Kolbotn, Norway, which is also known as the home of metal greats Darkthrone.  They settled on playing classic-styled death metal after experimenting with things like punk and dual bass guitar (presumably in the Man is the Bastard style). 


Coffins is a death/doom metal band that formed in 1996 in Tokyo, Japan.  Their sound is influenced by old school ’80s and ’90s doom metal, death metal and thrash metal.  Since 2000, Coffins has been extemely prolific, recording 4 full-length albums and appearing on over 15 splits and EP's.  Maryland Deathfest 2014 will mark Coffins' third appearance, having previously played in 2008 and 2010.


Portal is an Australian extreme metal band known for its unorthodox fusion of death metal with black metal. The band's hybrid musical style is characterized by heavily distorted guitar riffs, down-tuned rhythms, and vocals ranging from "menacing, echoing" sound effects to guttural grunts.  Lead guitarist Horror Illogium has described Portal's intent as "to capture a cinematic horror scope".  The band members keep their identities obscured and use stage names.


Impaled is a death metal and goregrind band from Oakland, California. The band's name is an acronym, standing for "Immoral Medical Practitioners And Licentious Evil-Doers".  Several Impaled members also play in the band Ghoul.

Blood Duster

Blood Duster is a grindcore/stoner metal band from Melbourne, Australia.  Formed in 1991 as a grindcore band, their music has evolved over the years to incorporate a more "death rock" style and blending it with elements of grindcore.  The group is also well known for their humorous song titles and lyrics.


Deceased are a death/thrash metal band from Arlington.  The band formed in 1984 and has developed a cult following over their nearly 30 year history, releasing dozens of records and hundreds of live shows.  Deceased were the first band to sign with Relapse Records, though the band left the label in 2003.  

The Chasm

The Chasm are a death metal band that formed in 1992 in Mexico City, Mexico.  The band is currently based out of Chicago, Illinois after relocating there in 1997.  The Chasm formed from the core members of the now-defunct Mexican band Cenotaph.  Aside from death metal, The Chasm's music draws in elements from other extreme genres, giving their sound a more progressive feel.

Sadistic Intent

Sadistic Intent is a death metal band formed in 1987 in Los Angeles, California.  They were one of the pioneering classic death metal acts in the area, and though they have not recorded new material in several years, the group still has occasional live performances.  Two members of the band, Rick and Bay Cortez, also run a record store called Dark Realm Records out of Downey, California.


Unleashed are a Swedish death metal band that formed after founding member Johnny Hedlund left the band Nihilist.  Formed in 1989, they are considered to be one of the first death metal acts to incorporate Norse/Viking folklore into their lyrical themes, rather than the death and gore typical of the period, and they are considered among the forefathers of Viking metal.
